Job Description

Join our Environmental Chemistry Team to support a US EPA national environmental monitoring research program on the campus of the Pacific Ecological Systems Division in Corvallis, OR. Work environment is collegial and team oriented in newly renovated analytical laboratories.

 

Period of Performance: Two full-time temporary positions May to September 2024. Work can begin with reduced hours if successful candidate is a student until summer break.

 

Essential Duties: Participate as a support chemistry technician for CSS in team-oriented research projects related to ecosystem monitoring and assessment on our contract at the US EPA Pacific Ecological Systems Division in Corvallis, OR. The research incorporates the analysis of surface water, biological tissues, soils, and sediments. After a detailed orientation, duties will include the following tasks:

    • Receive and log-in more than 200 samples per month
    • Filter, preserve and digest water samples
    • Prepare sample containers
  • Analyze samples to determine pH, alkalinity, turbidity, color and conductivity using standard operating procedures
  • Assist with labware washing, laboratory housekeeping, and cooler shipments
  • Maintain laboratory records
  • Enter experimental data using Excel
  • Prepare reagents
  • Assist chemists with other tasks as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least one year of college with at least two completed chemistry courses or a related lab science
  • Prior work or intern experience demonstrating dependability and ability to fulfill work requirements
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Capability to complete tasks in an organized, focused and timely fashion
  • Ability to follow instructions from lead chemist and established procedures
  • Ability to work safely with chemicals
  • Capability to pay attention to details and perform basic troubleshooting.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • On track to complete a B.S./B.A. in Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, or related science
  • Three months or more experience working in a laboratory.

Physical requirements

  • Moderate lifting (20 to 40 lbs)
  • Move about freely in a laboratory setting
  • Work proficiently with computer keyboards and screens
  • Work flexible work hours including most Saturdays during the summer and overtime hours (as needed).
